“I am proud to be someone who seeks to listen to the stories of LGBTQ+ youth.

I am a child abuse investigator in a southern state that is often quite behind in equality initiatives for LGBTQ+ youth. By wearing a rainbow on my badge when I interview children in investigations, I have seen LGBTQ+ youth feel seen and supported. Wearing a rainbow badge is not only a beautiful reminder to me of the power of my own queer identity, but it also allows me to connect with kids who often are not able to express this part of themselves with other adults in their lives. My favorite quote about the rainbow badge was by a trans teenager I interviewed. He said, ‘I felt good when you called me by my name, but now that I see the rainbow you're wearing, I know I can trust you with my story.'”
